You’re not going to believe what I’ve just done to my Iron ShirtDuck Fat Splatter Disaster?!

Botherings | Thoughts & Tales | October 17, 2025

Alex is the chef at Coin our favourite restaurant in Hebden Bridge. He’s also a lover of the Iron Shirt one of our best loved overshirts. Iterations come and go but there’s always an Iron Shirt in the range. There are new versions planned too so keep an eye on our newsletter.

We are all guilty of ‘I’m just going to do this’ whilst wearing our favourite clothes. Maybe it’s walking the dog, doing an oil change on the bike, a light bit of DIY.

Here’s what happened.

‘Just turfed duck fat all down my bloody over shirt! Any suggestions, just soap and water?’

Ed responds: Oh man! I will ask Halley Stevensons. Hold the line…

Baking soda to soak up the grease overnight then brushing off – you’re best acting fast. If that doesn’t work you can also dab with cold water and Castile soap then air drying and re proofing if you’ve taken any wax off with the duck fat.

Wow! Scarface does the laundry.

Ed responds to Alex: There’s also the plan B of slathering the whole thing in duck fat!

‘I did think that. Whole new meaning to oilskins.’

‘Doesn’t appear to have done anything. I’ll get some Castile soap and give it a go’

All’s well that ends well and with perseverance Alex got his Iron Shirt wearable again. So a word to the wise. Don’t panic. Ask for help. Follow the instructions. If that doesn’t work, get more duck fat.

‘I followed the advice from Halley Stevenson, putting a load of bicarb on it overnight’

(I think this would have worked better if it were a liquid oil, not a solid fat). I would advise to be careful of the brassware as it oxidises them. Then I cleaned it three times with Castille soap and cold water.

Finally giving it a douse in a bath of cold water to get rid of water marks from the cleaning. Obviously, where it’s been cleaned the wax has now gone, but I reckon that can be fixed with reproofing.’

Enjoy the perks of an Iron Shirt
