Sustainability
Not just a buzzword

Being bothered to do things right rather than easy and in the spirit of our don’t be a dick principle, here are a few notes on how we like to do things at HebTroCo.

Sustainability is a buzz word in the clothing business and along with green washing and flag shagging it frankly makes us feel a bit nauseous. We’re sure that you’re wise to all the blah blah blah…

Our aim is to make only good quality clothes that will physically last and be desirable to wear for a long time.

We’ve been influenced by the vintage clothing of the early twentieth century. Much of it was made for a purpose like utilitarian workwear and uniforms. Not everything that’s old is good, but for garments to last a long time they have to be made well and still look good to wear in our times. We’ve developed a respect for the quality of what came before and are doing our best to leave only good stuff behind.

No plastic in our jeans

We want our jeans to last… but not til the end of time.

Most jeans are sewn using thread containing polyester. Some denims even contain polymer elastane for stretch. Not ours…

HebTroCo jeans have always been made from 100% cotton denim. We’ve never been into that “stretch to fit” nonsense. The power of a good fit lie in the pattern, the cut of the cloth and how it’s stitched together. Do it right and you get maximum comfort and manoeuvrability from rigid 100% cotton raw denim.

In 2024, we made a step forwards in our jeans design by switching all sewing threads to Tencel. It’s a biodegradable fibre made from wood pulp. We also removed all polycotton labels and tabs, replacing them with 100% cotton alternatives and printing wash care instructions on the pocket bags.

The only remaining non-biodegradable hardware in our jeans are the brass buttons. These are solid brass – no concealed plastic inserts – and can be removed for recycling at the end of the jeans’ life.
