Made for you in London from a 100% organic cotton, 15oz raw selvedge denim. Packed with character, even before wear. The slubby warp yarns create lighter shades in the denim’s texture, just like the best workwear of the past and will go on to look even better with wear. We’re proud that the Iron Shirt is lining up to be a vintage classic of the future.

Denim is from the Candiani mill in Milan – world renowned for their sustainability and fine quality. We’ve been working with them since 2019 and love what they do. Press studs are precision made for us at Berning Fasters in Germany – the oldest solid metal button factory in the world and a family business. Ed cycled there to collect our jeans’ buttons, but that’s another story.
The story of the Iron Shirt
The very first Iron Shirt was a big mistake. We’d intended to make it from 8oz denim, but sent the wrong roll of selvedge to the factory and ended up with 16oz shirts instead. Thus, the Iron Shirt was born.
In this business we’ve got used to dealing with problems. After all we started the company just as the Brexit vote happened, followed by Covid and the non stop apocalypse that’s followed. Keep calm and carry on making really good stuff is the mantra.
Unlike the original, this latest evolution of the Iron Shirt is everything we intended it to be. The only mistake to be made is not buying one when you have the chance.

100% organic cotton (BCI certified).
Solid brass press studs precision made by Berning, the fastener kings from Wuppertal in Germany. Ed cargo biked over to see them all the way from Calderdale in February 2024, returning with our first brass buttons.
Run and fell side seams, shoulder and yoke seam across chest.
Hang loop inside neck.
Selvedge stripe inside placket.
Made to our pattern at Tower Garments in London.

Two invisible side seam pockets. They’re big.

Candiani have been our primary denim supplier since 2019. Their approach to production innovation and sustainability is nothing short of exceptional. It’s no wonder they are considered the world’s most environmentally aware denim mill.
The indigo Iron Shirt is made from Candiani selvedge denim. What is selvedge?
Sustainability is at the forefront of all stages of production of Candiani denim. Using BCI cotton, a micro-plastics-free dye process, solar power and water recycling to name some of the process used.
Plant based (biodegradable, non toxic, microplastics-free) sizing compound is used in the dyeing process, replacing all hazardous chemicals that are commonly used in the denim industry
Selvedge is cloth that has had its edges finished by the loom it is woven on. It is hardier and more characterful. Selvedge looms were replaced in the modern day by projectile looms that produce greater yields of denim at a faster rate. These modern looms however leave cloth unfinished with raw edges that can risk the weave unravelling.
Selvedge denim can be identified by its signature stripe. In jeans, this can be found in the turn-up, but in the Iron Shirt you’ll find it inside on the placket. This stripe is the edge of the denim cloth.
The Iron Shirt’s selvedge denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms from the 1950s at Candiani Denim in Milan.
The Iron Shirt is made from raw selvedge denim. Please follow the wash and care instructions included with your order to avoid f*cking them up.
Raw denim is not colourfast and requires special attention when laundering.

Ed wears a size medium shirt in the photos. He’s 5’8″ and 10.5 stone.
