What to eat and drink in Hebden Bridge
Words and pics by brant
We are HebTroCo, we’re a British-made menswear company based in Calderdale. Our first ever products were made in Hebden Bridge, and we now work there full time. We don’t have a shop in Hebden Bridge. We’re online only, but there are LOTS of actual shops in which to eat, drink and spend your money. These are my personal favourites and where you might find us, if you’re unlucky. All are within five minutes walk of each other.

Bottles in the front, bar in the rear.
Open Tuesday to Sunday, Drink is THE BEST BAR in Hebden Bridge. An amazing high quality rolling selection of guest beers and regular lines. Drink’s owner Liz offers something for anyone that actually likes beer. Hazy Hoppy IPAs, DIPAs, TIPAs, session pales, mild, stouts, super sour sours, there’s also Delirium Red on tap (you can’t buy a pint though!). Today’s selection goes from a 12% Porter to a 3.3% Mild, with just about everything you could imagine in between. There’s even a selection of surprisingly delicious low and no alcohol beer.

Small plates, great wine, cocktails, Wednesday to Sunday. Perfect for a long lunch, early evening pre-cinema set up, or a lovely long evening to relax into. You have to try the potatoes. Seasonal produce from around the area and into Europe used brilliantly. Who knew tinned fish could taste that good? Not cheap, but nice places aren’t. Incredibly knowledgeable waiting staff who can guide you through the meats and other eats.
SAM’S PIZZAS
IG – No. Sam doesn’t believe in social media but you can ring them on 07494 280259.
Location – 22 New Road, Hebden Bridge, HX7 8EF.
Crazy posters in the window, great food inside.
If you go on the Internet and read about Hebden Bridge, one of the first things that comes up is that it’s got more pizza shops per resident than anywhere else in the world. And if not that, it’s something like that. Sam’s is one of the newest, growing from a market stall operation to full time premises in the last year. Sam’s is thin, crispy, Neapolitan style made with a sourdough base, and is our favourite, but frankly you won’t go wrong with Woody’s on Crown St (New York Style), Peoples Pizza on Bridge Gate (Wood fired), and we’ve got to include Marco’s on Valley Road (Italian/Mediterranean).
CROWN STREET CHIPPY

Location – 8 Crown St, Hebden Bridge HX7 8EH
You can taste it from there can’t you?
Unlike trying to choose the best pizza, we can guarantee this is the best chippy in Hebden Bridge. I mean there’s only one. But even if there weren’t, this would still top the chart. Beef Dripping means it’s a no for some, but the flavour and fry is off the scale. Haddock, of course, freshly cooked, and if you want a big fish, get in early as there are only 5 a day. You’d have to go a long way to find better fish and chips than these.
You don’t need to go far…
All of the above recommendations are along a five minute stretch of walking.
Other honourable mentions
NELSONS (Crown Street) allegedly has the best vegan food in Hebden Bridge. I’m too scared to go down the stairs and haven’t been despite living here for 12 years. I really must sort that. But high praise from those that have.
VOCATION AND CO (New Road) seems to be going through a bit of a turbulent time with staff, and their beer offering is now almost exclusively Vocation Beer (which isn’t bad, it’s just not got much variety of different brands).
OLD GATE (Market St) is where we started the company, but we don’t go in much anymore as it’s full of teenagers at weekends, and our kids are teenagers in Hebden at weekends.
