Tradition restyled

Duffles are typically long coats with hoods, but we’ve chopped all that away to favour everyday real world practicality. Hoods can be a hassle when not needed, especially when you’re sitting in a car or on a train. Extra length can feel heavy and restrictive, so we’ve made ours jacket-length for improved movability and comfort.

The Chopped Duffle provides all the warmth and comfort of heavyweight duffle cloth in a more wearable and lighter style.

It looks just as good as an overcoat on top of your overshirts and big jumpers as it does over a t-shirt.

Wood toggles and proper rope loops.

Raised finish for luxurious feel and maximum warmth.

Made to our pattern (made by Amelia) in Hackney Wick, London.

The Making of the Chopped Duffle

The project started when a knitwear agent we work with showed up with a traditional duffle coat and tales of its maker in Hackney Wick. London Tradition make high quality outerwear and are still based in the capital’s East End, once a thriving centre of clothing manufacture.

To be honest we never liked duffle coats that much… the heavy hood and lengthy body reminded us of teachers we hated in the 70s – that kind of thing. We’ve always loved the heavy wool fabric and the bombproof construction though and there’s no denying it’s a classic British design, that’s stood the test of time. Maybe it just needed some changes?

Ed went on the lookout for vintage examples...

He struck gold in a vintage shop, Jojo’s Rag Parade, in Sheffield, stumbling across a heavily modified duffle coat that was made and customised in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Back in the day, these garments were made to last and sold on quality and longevity rather than price. You paid your money for something that would probably outlast you!

This approach to making is what appeals and motivates us.

Duffle woven by Hainsworth

Historic Yorkshire weavers

The choice of cloth is a critical step in our design process. We knew exactly who we wanted to make the fabric for our Chopped Duffle.

AW Hainsworth are renowned local weavers operating out of their eighteenth century mill just a few miles away in Leeds. Amelia made a pattern and commissioned Hainsworth to custom weave and finish a 100% wool heavyweight fabric, a suitable match for the vintage original duffle coat and way better than any nylon wool blend we’ve seen elsewhere.

Product Care

The Chopped Duffle is made from 100% British woven wool and requires special care.

Wool is naturally odour resistant and should not need regular laundering. You can gently steam clean to freshen it up. Or hang it outside to air.

Do not machine wash. Do not dry clean. Do not iron.

If soiled, gently sponge wash the area with lukewarm water mixed with a small amount of wool-friendly detergent. Do not scrub. Work the sponge in the direction of the wool fibres.

Air dry outside, avoiding direct sunlight.

This chopped duffle is the real deal! Clearly built to last with quality you can feel as soon as you slip into its warming embrace! The heavyweight wool is warm and sturdy, sourced with full traceability, so you know it’s the good stuff. The detailing of the solid beech toggles, distressed rope fastenings, and perfect stitching give it that classic heritage look but the chop gives it a new, contemporary feel, its shameless unique and a real head turner! It’s the kind of coat that only gets better with age. If you want something made right, this is it.

I love this garment, it feels like wearing a piece of history. And you feel the responsibility on your shoulders.
And then, you feel eyes on you.
Unquestionable quality of materials, impeccable construction, excellent fit.
If you don’t have one in your wardrobe, you will always be missing a piece (of history).
