Spread the wordIt’s worth shouting about and so are the people who make them
“Do you get many people coming to visit who you make clothes for?” The answer was “no not really”. This amazes me.
Why would you not want to see your stuff being made? And why would you not want to shout about it and the people who you’ve chosen to do the making? There is real value in the telling of the story.
I’m with Tim who makes films in Great Yarmouth at Yarmouth Oilskins. They make our bestselling Jacksnipe Overjacket series and we’re making a film about it. Tim is also a director for Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Eastenders, a detail that gets everyone on the factory excited when I let this information be known.

The Jacksnipe is brilliant. Simple, practical, stylish, looks good on everyone, in relaxed or even smart settings. It’s worth shouting about and so are the people who make them. We’re proud about what we do and the makers are proud of their work. That’s what our film will be about.
If you’ve got issue 5 of BOTHER you will have seen the feature on the HebTroCo Jacksnipe. Written by Amelia, our designer and production manager, it’s a good read and I’m not going to repeat it here. Get a copy, get the inside information, know your history. And remember when you buy the mag for twenty quid you get a voucher for twenty quid that you could put towards the next Jacksnipe, or a pair of jeans, or whatever.

Perhaps some brands like to keep their suppliers secret? That seems like a shame as good work deserves credit. Maybe brands want to give the impression they make everything they sell. I wonder if they spin all the yarn and make the buttons too? Maybe they just can’t be bothered.
On the way down to Yarmouth we called in to see Ashley Clarke the leather worker. He made wallets and gloves for us once and now advertises in BOTHER. We’re filming him as part of another project.

Ashley Clarke in his leather workshop
He told a story about when he came up to see us in Hebden Bridge. He was chatting to brant, the co-founder of HebTroCo, about the art of business. Apparently brant said, “If you do the stuff that we do it would be fucking criminal not to tell people about it.” Telling the story is like talking to people. There is real value in making beautiful things that people will buy and love and it’s important to spread the word.
