There is debate about the origins of the word “corduroy”. Some argue that it comes from the French term “corde du roi” – cloth of the king – while others protest that its true roots lie on our side of the channel in 18th century British textiles. As far as we’re concerned, it was invented in Yorkshire, so everyone else can step off the bickering bus.

Corduroy is a fustian cloth (heavy woven cotton with a raised surface) and the B-side to moleskin at HebTroCo. The Calder Valley, where we’re based, is famous for once weaving it. During the Industrial Revolution, garments made of fustian were the clothes of the people, the original workwear. Hardwearing, warm and long lasting – everything someone needed to get through long days at the mill or labouring in the field.

Millwork and ploughing may not be commonplace these days but the perks of wearing corduroy still remain relevant.
