Breaking new ground

Discovery is the name of the Royal Research Ship dry docked in Dundee on the River Tay. She was the vessel on which Captain Scott and Shackleton led their first expedition to the Antarctic in 1901. One hell of a feat that set the way for Dundee promoting itself as the city of discoveries.

A few minutes inland from the River Tay is Halley Stevensons. They’ve been manufacturing and innovating waxed cotton fabrics for over 150 years. The previous five versions of the Jacksnipe Overjacket have all been made out of their cloth.

Recently, Halleys have turned their attention to developing sustainable alternatives to waterproof treatments. This follows the proposed EU ban on potentially harmful C6-based PFC chemical coatings. They have developed a 100% plant based alternative that is sustainably sourced and made using fully traceable ingredients. The dry wax coating is also plant-derived, replacing the need for petroleum based waxes.

We share similar values with Halleys. We both love making stuff in Britain, we value quality and both of us are striving to improve sustainability in the fashion market. Halley Stevensons are flying the flag for textile innovation in Dundee, enabling us move one step closer to removing all traces of plastic from our garments.

It’s in the details

P200 Biodry™ Discovery Rain outer made from 100% BCI cotton with a plant-based dry wax treatment and DWR coating.

P156 Noble 100% BCI cotton lining with a fluorocarbon free finish for easy sliding on and off when you’re wearing lots of layers.

British made plastic-free buttons made from horn.

Plenty of pockets…

Two generous handwarmer pockets with plenty of space to stash stuff.

Securely tucked underneath these are two patch pockets each with enough room for a large smart phone or your specs.

Two large inside poacher’s pockets with button closures – they’ll easily accommodate a notebook or roadkill pheasant / nut roast that’s fallen off the back of a lorry.

Made for us in the Far East

(of England)

Based in Great Yarmouth, Yarmouth Oilskins started making in 1898 as Yarmouth Stores, supplying fishermen with clothing, hosiery, seamen’s oil and waterproof clothing. Over the years they’ve supplied workwear and speciality waterproof garments to the industries of the sea.

They’re a small scale, independent company with a background in traditional workwear. Their story and values align well with ours..

Care Guide

Hand wash inside out. Line dry. To bring the wax back to the surface, medium iron on the outside.

You can reproof your Jacksnipe Overjacket with Halley Stevensons reproofing spray.

Sizing Guide

In the photos Ed wears Medium. He’s 5’8″ and weighs 10.5 stone.

Finally managed to get one of these after missing out the first couple of times, as always the quality is outstanding. Another great piece of clothing that will get plenty of wear.

I don’t think I’ll every really get over the regret of missing out on the first iteration (I buggered about emailing you about sizing and Ed’s body measurements on the day of release and therefore missed the boat), as that petrol blue looked different from owt I’d seen before, or indeed since.
But today’s delivery has softened the blow.
This Jacksnipe is stunning. The look and feel of the jacket is amazing and you can just tell it’s been well thought out and well made. And the sizing is almost made to measure. I would have never ordinarily gone for a small size but I’m glad I took your advice.
The Jacksnipe looks so good with my M16s and a pair of Red Wings. I’m beyond chuffed.
