Stop killing moles to make moleskin!

No moles were harmed during the making of this Iron Shirt – moleskin does not COME from moles, it just feels soft like a mole’s skin.

Moleskin is a tough heavy fabric made from densely woven cotton, initially looped, then sheared which creates a short soft pile on the upper side. It looks and feels a bit like chammy and some sorts of velvet, but is actually far tougher than either.

Moleskin has been used in garment making for many years and is popular for hunting, building work and countryside use due to its ability to shrug off damage, keep clean, be “quiet” in use, as well as being breathable and comfortable even when wet.

It’s in the details

100% cotton moleskin cloth from Brisbane Moss.

Solid brass press studs precision made by Berning, the fastener kings from Wuppertal in Germany. Ed cargo biked over to see them all the way from Calderdale in February 2024, returning with our first brass buttons.

Run and fell side seams, shoulder and yoke seam across chest.

Hang loop inside neck.

Made to our pattern at Tower Garments in London.

Proper pockets

Two invisible side seam pockets. They’re big.

Two even bigger inside pockets. Forgotten your bag for life? You’ll save face by having these pockets when you need to do some tactical shopping.

Two outside chest pockets.

From colossal f*ck up to firm favourite

The very first Iron Shirt was a big mistake. We’d intended to make it from 8oz denim, but sent the wrong roll of selvedge to the factory and ended up with 16oz shirts instead. Thus, the Iron Shirt was born.

In this business we’ve got used to dealing with problems. After all we started the company just as the Brexit vote happened, followed by Covid and the non stop apocalypse that’s followed. Keep calm and carry on making really good stuff is the mantra.

Unlike the original, this latest evolution of the Iron Shirt is everything we intended it to be. The only mistake to be made is not buying one when you have the chance.

Care Guide

Moleskin is 100% cotton. These natural fibres need care to keep them looking good.

Wash at 30ºC with non biological detergent, no softener, no tumble drying, air/line dry.

Don’t just stick them in the washing machine with everything.

For best results SLOW spin, air dry and definitely don’t tumble dry.

Fit & Sizing Guide

Ed wears a size medium shirt in the photos. He’s 5’8″ and 10.5 stone.

Will fit a sweatshirt or light jumper underneath.

Any questions at all please email us and we’ll do our best to guide you.

The overshirt of all other overshirts takes another tangent, warm and rugged in a colour that definitely looks like a fine suede . The colour makes the fine details and stitching stand out more than the denim version and the brass buttons finish it off perfectly. I thought I’d be collecting old lawn mowers or something by now but iron shirts it is…
