You’ve bought a lovely pair of raw denim jeans. As they get older and start to fade you want to create your own fade lines rather than have the washing machine do it.
If you want the best looking jeans wash at 3 to 6 month intervals.
Indigo dye will colour anything else in the wash. So wash your jeans on their own.
Washing denim is about being gentle and avoiding creasing so we’re going to do a soak wash in a bath or sink.
- LUKEWARM water 8-10 inches deep
- 1/2 lid of your non bio wash liquid. Agitate the water
- Lay your jeans in the water. To stop them floating weigh them down with something like saucepans full of water
- Leave them for half an hour
- Now give them a “shake” – think of this as getting hold of someone, not to hurt them, but just to give them a message!
- Leave for 15 minutes and do the “shake” again
- Lift out your jeans, drain water and rinse out the bath
- Fill with COLD water
- Submerge and “shake” then weigh down as before.
- Leave for half an hour.
- Drip dry. NO WRINGING.
If you really can’t be arsed with all of that then put them in the washing machine, it will not destroy them. Use the wool wash or 30 degree setting. Drip dry if you can or use the slowest spin cycle. Air dry and don’t tumble dry.
Will my jeans shrink?
The denim we use is raw. This means that it hasn’t been washed and hasn’t been through chemical colour-fast treatments. It’s been sanforized, which means that shrinkage on first wash will be minimal – less than 2% in length and 1% in width. This means that leg length will shorten by half an inch. Waist shrinkage is negligible. Jeans may tighten a little in the waist, but will loosen after wear.
Is this eco denim?
Working with Italian denim masters, Candiani, the world’s most Eco denim mill, our selvedge denim has the highest environmental credentials.
At all stages of manufacture, environmental sustainability is at the forefront of the selvedge production with BCI cotton, microplastics free dye process, solar power and water recycling just some of the process that are used.
