It’s got to be useful and it’s got to look good…
Good material will last and so will style.
The roots of our Railway Jacket lie deep in post WW2 Japan workwear. Designed to balance function and durability for long hours spent working on the tracks or driving the trains, the original Japan Railway Work Jacket was focused in its form – something we admire and appreciate. We have a 1970s vintage example in our archive.
Our design is paired down but keeps the spirit of smart utility, cut and sewn from a light but durable 8oz Herringbone twill cloth rather than the poly cotton of the originals.
Herringbone twill fabric was widely used by the US military for uniforms in the WW2 era and looked great doing it.
Like denim, it fades beautifully with wear, washing and age. The weave, with its zig-zags like the bones of a herring, has a fantastic texture and will become more visible as the jacket ages.

An incredible jacket, so versatile. I would usually go small but had to go medium due to stock but the quality of the fit meant it was fine. The Herringbone pattern is beautiful. I wear it everyday with a shirt and tie as a teacher because suit jackets are shite for wear and tear. This company and their products are a real gem. Cherish company’s like this. We are lucky to have them. Seriously this jacket is so good that I just keep trying it on in my PJs!
