The River Runs Red
In Hebden Bridge when it rains a lot the River Calder turns a strange colour. Iron oxide from the old clay mines washes out and our river runs a brown-red-gold colour.
The brick factories that made the building materials of the mills in our valley still make their mark in times of heavy rain. Flooded mine workings wash the browny red clay into the River Calder turning the water into a coloured ribbon.
Workwear cloth used to be woven here and clothed many miners, ship builders, farmers and weavers. Thick fustian cloth was skilfully cut into corduroy. Heavy and hardwearing, insulating warmth against the cold damp air of the high moors and valley bottoms.
Jumbo cords are still king even though we’re mostly playing in them now rather than doing the hard labour of our predecessors. But the cloth was good then and is still the same now. The Brisbane Moss mill in our valley wove some of the best corduroy in those days and today they still commission the same specification of premium velvety cord from their partner mill in Italy.

Product Care
Corduroy is 100% cotton. These natural fibres need care to keep them looking good.
Machine wash inside out at 30ºC with a bleach-free non-bio detergent or gentle detergent like Clean Jeans. Do not use softener.
For best results drip dry or slow spin. Remove from machine immediately at end of cycle.
Do not tumble dry.
Do not use a heated airer.
Air dry / line dry only.
Will my cords shrink?
They will shrink up to half an inch in leg length only on first wash (we include a little bit of extra length in the leg to compensate for this).
