From oil painting to denim – art on your back!

Alan Coulson is an acclaimed portrait painter based up the road from us in Hebden Bridge. His work has featured in the National Portrait Gallery and even on the cover of the New Yorker magazine. We’re big fan of Alan’s work. His skill with a paintbrush and tube of oil paint is out of this world.

We set Alan the challenge of leaving the familiarity of cotton canvas, painting instead on a piece of selvedge denim, the same we use for our GVNR 14 and M14 jeans.

A few weeks after dropping off the denim, we got a message from Alan letting us know the painting was almost complete. We popped over to see him and have a brew. What a painting!

Working on raw indigo denim had presented Alan with a whole new painting experience. Indigo dye isn’t fixed, it moves and it bleeds from the denim surface. Using it as a substrate makes for a very interactive painting experience and Alan soon realised that his tube of white paint was all that was really needed because the indigo released from the denim could be used to create shadows.

Alan’s finished painting was transformed into a half tone digital image by Vic and scaled down to fit the area between the pleats on the back of the denim shirt.

Painted on denim to be printed on denim. It’s a true celebration of the creativity of this fantastic cloth. The next step is for you to wear it and work in your fades, enhancing the character of this lovely denim. Read more about that below.

A characterful denim canvas

Beyond the skull, each Denim Head shirt is packed with unique characteristics brought about by the denim weaving and finishing process.

The Denim Head shirt is made from a characterful indigo denim from Candiani that’s been finished with a rinse wash. The rinse gives the shirt a bluer hue with a softer, more supple feel since some of the starch has been removed. You may spot signs of this process in the denim’s character, bluer indigo crease marks like small lightning strikes across the denim’s face.

Wear it, fade it, add to its character with your own story.

More about the make...

100% Regenagri® certified cotton

Regenerative Agriculture is the antidote to damaging, intensive farming. Farming with nature. Not just avoiding synthetic fertiliser and pesticides but using extra ecological practices.

Intensive farming leads to soil degradation. Regenerative agriculture is a way of farming that builds and improves soil fertility, whilst sequestering and storing atmospheric CO2, increasing on farm diversity and improving water and energy management.

Just received my Denim Head shirt. Really is a beautiful piece. The quality and attention to detail is outstanding. The skull painting is very eye catching and sits perfectly between the shoulders. I’m 6ft4inch and 100kg went for a 2xl because I like a lose fit and having a long back I like a bit of length. I feel an XL would have been too short on me. Looking forward to wearing this next week on my trip to Dublin.
