HebTroCo was founded to allow us to work where we live and make things as locally and sustainably as possible, so this is a milestone product for us.

Since day one everything that we’ve sold has been UK made. Over the years we’ve worked hard on the little things, the details, to source things from as close to home as possible and we’ve been pushing to use recycled materials. We’ve done OK but we can definitely do better.

Lots of raw materials aren’t UK made anymore so sometimes we use excellent quality European alternatives. There are lots of sheep here though, so we’re over the moon to be offering another product using HD Wool as quilting material.

We decided to call it what it is (gilet always seems like a bit of a wanky name).

It’s basically a washable and more ethical version of the down vests that we all love.

Two way, UK made zip

Two side seam outer pockets

Two inside chest pockets

Recycled fabrics throughout

Both the outer shell and lining are made using recycled polyester.

The soft-to-the-touch outer is from the highly regarded Olmetex mill in Italy. It’s water repellent, windproof and looks dead sexy.

Recycled lining keeps things light and feeling slinky.

We’ve always focussed on working locally and using the best quality natural materials…

This year we’re bringing much more of this ethos to market with our pioneering use of wool as insulation in several new products.

We’re using exclusively British wool from HD Wool who are based locally to us in the historic Salts Mill in Saltaire near Bradford.

HD Wool Insulation

You can’t beat a nature based solution and wool is definitely that.

Wool from British sheep couldn’t be more local.

You can go out in the rain in this, it’s fine to get the quilting wet, you won’t ruin it.

Don’t worry it doesn’t pong of sheep arse when wet!

Fully machine washable (unlike down jackets).

Why HD wool?

Comfortable, trapping air to generate excellent warmth
Naturally temperature-regulating and breathable to maintain comfort
Odour-inhibiting and anti-bacterial, meaning reduced washing
Natural and renewable for planet-positive outerwear
Guaranteed 3rd party verified traceable non-mulesed wool
Naturally elastic, compressible wool crimped fibres help to improve thermal performance
Excellent moisture management. It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight without feeling wet

Traceability

All our wool can be traced back to the farm it came from and is Woolkeepers® certified. Farmers are paid properly and in turn ensure that regenerative land management is practiced through the Land to Market™ standard.

“Regenerative agriculture has a critical role to play in impacting the climate crisis. We measure outcomes & impact on the environment such as soil health, sequestered carbon, water & biodiversity.”

But isn’t wool difficult to wash?

No not at all! Unlike duck or goose down our wool insulation is fully machine washable. Because our insulation is 75% wool combined with 25% PLA it’s fine to go in the machine.

Expect more new ideas on how we’re going to be using this game-changing new insulation that is, in fact, centuries old…

1 review for Body Warmer with HD Wool / Kalahari

  1. Phil Thomas (verified owner)

I love this body warmer, just the job over a light shirt on these cooler autumn mornings and thin enough to wear under an outer shell without restricting movement. I really appreciate the use of wool for the lining, I grew up on a farm and spent many hours shearing sheep and I’m glad to see wool being used again. The overall style is one of snugness without looking like a Michelin Man!
