1944 Jacket9oz 100% cotton ripstop
Super utilitarian overshirt / jacket with enormous half bellows chest pockets. Vintage military design reworked for modern life. Made for us in North London using our pattern, designed in Calderdale.
We were given exclusive first access to use this 100% organic cotton 9oz ripstop cloth from Halley Stevensons’ new un-waxed range.
Large buttoned half bellows chest pockets swallow up all your essentials, holding the cargo well and looking remarkably stylish doing such a utilitarian task.
Plenty of room in the sleeves means you can have a short sleeved jacket when rolled up.
Cuffs can be adjusted with the button and choice of two button holes.
Vintage military designs like this were made for a purpose and combine practicality with good looks. What was created back then for army use makes for great everyday wear today. This is our rework of a mid twentieth century classic that still has the style.
Made to our pattern in London by Tower Garments.
We are the first company to use these new fabrics from Halley Stevensons, making this another great British collaboration of manufacturing and clothing brand.

Durable by design
Ripstop was first developed during World War II as an alternative to delicate and expensive silk. The densely woven grid of coarse fibres stops tears from spreading, extending the life of a garment.
The ripstop cloth we have chosen for the 1944 Jacket is a precursor to Halley Stevensons newly launched Baltic Works collection, a range of untreated, high-quality, natural fabrics. As part of the development process, we were given special access to an untreated version of the traditional R200 cloth to real-world-test in jacket form. It was a triumph with the first sample of the 1944 Jacket getting a big thumbs up from us.
The grid weave has a fantastic texture that will fade beautifully with wear and washing. The cloth is aero tumbled for softness on first wear and sanforised to minimise any further wash shrinkage.
Why ‘1944’?
It started with a vintage piece Ed dug out from the Rag Parade shop in Sheffield. A classic US Army jacket from WW2. It has physically endured and retained its stylish look for 80 years – qualities that we aspire to achieve in our garments.
In the summer of 2024, we launched a green herringbone twill interpretation of the vintage piece which we named the 1943 Jacket. The 1944 is its successor, made up in a whole new cloth. We have also made some physical changes to the sleeves, making them more roomy so it’s even easier to roll them right up your arm, safari style, when it’s warm.
We haven’t religiously stuck to the design of the vintage piece we have in our collection – and for good reason… The original has optimistic “gas protection features” – a flap of material behind the front opening and some buttons at the back neck to attach a protective hood. This model was also impregnated with a “special” solution to resist gas vapours. We didn’t think you’d be wearing your shirt in a chemical warfare environment so we left all this stuff out!
In terms of cloth, a finer cotton weave was a more practical replacement for the rougher denim that had been used in the 1940s. Still rugged, the cloth had to meet the demands of action while also being comfortable to wear – two qualities that align with the requirements of a HebTroCo version. Longevity and wearability.

Just received this order – great quality as usual and enjoying the vintage look. Does still have a shirt vibe and look forward to wearing with sleeves rolled up as the weather turns warmer! I am usually a medium and this size worked for this item.
