HebTroCo was launched in 2016 with 176 pairs of moleskin trousers. Three years later came our first pair of denim jeans, the 177. So when the time came to name our next and newest fit, we opted for 178…

The 178 is a loose taper shape with comfort in the ballroom, thigh and knee, tapering gently to the hem. Mid rise for great shape and wear comfort (and to keep your crack out of sight!).

The 178 sport all the traits of a pair of HebTroCo jeans: Hardwearing, quality selvedge denim as a base; five button fly with solid brass buttons; a chunky leather patch on the back to feed your belt under; five pockets plus our signature “secret pocket” hidden in the left pocket bag to safety stow your loose change.

Made from 100% cotton raw selvedge denim woven at the Candiani mill in Italy using cotton sourced from farms practicing regenerative agriculture. More about that further down the page.

More about the make...

100% Regenagri® certified cotton

Regenerative Agriculture is the antidote to damaging, intensive farming. Farming with nature. Not just avoiding synthetic fertiliser and pesticides but using extra ecological practices.

Intensive farming leads to soil degradation. Regenerative agriculture is a way of farming that builds and improves soil fertility, whilst sequestering and storing atmospheric CO2, increasing on farm diversity and improving water and energy management.

178 Selvedge Denim Jeans / Indigo

Denim from Candiani

Candiani are masters in their craft, producing some of the world’s best selvedge denim.

Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of all stages of production at Candiani. Their dye process is micro-plastics-free, they use solar power and water recycling, and all their cotton is BCI certified.

Most of the selvedge we use is Regenagri© certified denim (which supports regenerative agriculture) or 100% Organic Cotton. We are proud to be one of the first brands in the world to use Regenagri© denim cloth to make our jeans.

What is Selvedge denim?

Selvedge is a premium denim woven only on vintage shuttle looms.

Compared to modern projectile looms, selvedge looms are smaller, slower and very noisy, but the character and durability of the denim they produce is unmatched.

The loom’s low yield is why selvedge is considered a premium denim and not the go-to choice for mass-market jeans.

The word “selvedge” comes from “self-edged,” which describes how the loom finishes the edges of the denim.

In the video, Vic explains how selvedge denim is made and why it’s the HebTroCo denim of choice.

Size Guide

The out of the bag leg length includes an extra 1-inch to compensate for first wash shrinkage. Any shrinkage will be in the leg, not the waist.

We’ve styled the 178 to be worn without a turn-up. If you prefer to wear your jeans with a permanent turn-up, choose a longer leg length to allow for this.

In the photos: Ed is 5’8″ / 10.5 stone and wears 30 waist, 28 leg.

Product Care

The 178 jeans are made from raw selvedge denim. Please follow the wash and care instructions included with your order to avoid f*cking it up.

Raw denim is not colourfast and requires special attention when laundering.

For the best fades, washing less often will yield better results. Take a look at our denim care online guide for a comprehensive overview on what’s required.

My latest HebTroCo present to myself – worth every penny. As with everything I’ve had from HebTroCo over the years these are several levels up on anything else. I’m going to do the 6-month wash thing, and I’ll photograph the jeans before and after each wash. In a decade or so I’ll still have great jeans – and a collection of photos that the modern art galleries of the world can fight over.

My 178’s arrived today, the usual outstanding quality, I expected nothing less. Well up to the standard of all my other HebTroCo purchases. I own a few pairs of the canvas and mole skin GVNR’s and a pair of 177 denims, these 178’s are a more relaxed fit and look like they will “wear in” nicely.
They are certainly well travelled too, after a 450 mile round trip from Walthamstow to Hebden Bridge and back to Chingford! Had I realised when ordered them, they are made only a short bus ride from home. Still, good to see small businesses being supported all over the country and your local Post Office as well.
