We’re big advocates for this wonderful natural fibre and all our jumpers are 100% wool.
Wool is naturally odour resistant so you don’t need to be washing your jumpers regularly. We usually do a wool wash out of season in the summertime when the drying is easy. Here’s how…
Our favourite method.
First of all, make sure the bath or basin is clean before you begin. You don’t want any residue from weird soaps or cleaning products mixing with your fresh water. Fill the tub with enough lukewarm water (not hot!) to submerge your garment. Add just a little of your wool-friendly detergent and swish the water around.
Submerge your garment in the tub and let it soak for about 30 minutes before you start poking at it. When the time comes, you can gently squeeze it to agitate the soap, but do not rub or twist it because that will break the wool fibres and leave your jumper feeling pretty sad.
Rinse with cold water. Remove your garment as it is. Don’t wring it out. Pop it on the side while you drain out the water and refill with cold. Put your wet lump of garment back in. Swish the water around to rinse it then drain the water out again. Repeat this until there are no more suds.
Time to dry. Squeeze the water out of the garment bit by bit. Remember NOT to wring. Just squeeze. Then grab a dry towel and lay your garment flat on top of it. If you need to, you can roll the towel up (with the garment inside) to squeeze out any excess water, then roll it back out again. Leave your garment on the towel lying flat until it’s completely dry. Do not place it in direct sunlight as the heat could cause the fibres to freak out and shrink.
We prefer to hand wash instead of using a washing machine. It puts you in control. However, if you insist on washing in a domestic machine you can do IF the care label inside your garment offers this as an option.
You must use a wool-friendly detergent AND select the wool delicate cycle on your machine. This preset will use a low temperature no spin. Do not tumble dry. Instead, dry flat as per the instructions for handwashing. Anything else could risk ruining your woollens and your woolly jumper street cred.
