Across-the-road Giles

Happen | February 29, 2016

There’s a guy who lives on the same street as our factory who clocked our Kickstarter campaign. He’d always wondered what went on in the building opposite him so he got in touch to see if he could go in and have a good old nosey around.

Over to you Giles…

Sometimes it pays to be cheeky. A brief request on Facebook led to me taking a tour round the mill that’s making these here HebTroCo trousers. Turns out that a similar display of boldness led to the founding of the company that is now putting Hebden trousers back on the most discerning of legs.

I followed the HebTroCo launch closely. I like trousers and I liked the brand that Ed and Brant were pitching. I’m also keen on the localised economy. I try to support local businesses whenever I can. I got really excited when I realised they were being made in the mill literally over the road from my house. I missed out on the Kickstarter run but I’ve ordered a pair of The 177 from the first production run proper.

What about this factory tour then?

I met Brant on a sunny Thursday morning and was treated/subjected to the backstory of the company. He then re-enacted the moment he ventured into the mill looking for someone to speak to about making trousers. He described his exploration in vivid detail, pausing only to point out a neat stack of freshly made moleskins.

We eventually entered the thrumming hub of the operation, the sewing shop. Here I had a chat with the boss of the mill about its history and the industry in Hebden Bridge in general. It was all too easy to get caught up in all these people’s enthusiasm for making stuff.

Then it was back downstairs again and briefly into the cutting room where stacks of cloth were being expertly sliced into patterns for Hebtroco kecks.

We finished the tour in the soon-to-be global Top Secret HQ of Hebtroco where Brant gave me some insight into their plans. More ranges. Delivery by zip wire (maybe just for me, that one).

“Local” is deep within the company’s DNA. Local skills, local suppliers, brand rooted in local history. In a time where authenticity is so highly prized this is the real deal.

Good, honest, no-messing, quality trousers made by people who care. More power to your elbows, gents.
