Yorkshire Wool insulation for our new 2022/23 range

We’ve always focussed on working locally and using the best quality natural materials. This year we’re bringing much more of this ethos to market with our pioneering use of wool as insulation in our clothing.

We’re using exclusively British wool from HD Wool who are based locally to us in the historic Salts Mill in Saltaire near Bradford.

Why wool?

Well why wouldn’t we want natural plastic free garment insulation with a host of benefits that comes from British farmers? Here’s the 101 on wool from HD…

Comfortable, trapping air to generate excellent warmth
Naturally temperature-regulating and breathable to maintain wearer comfort
Odour-inhibiting and anti-bacterial, meaning reduced washing
Natural and renewable for planet positive outwear
Guaranteed 3rd party verified traceable non-mulesed wool
Naturally elastic, compressible wool crimped fibres help to improve thermal performance
Excellent moisture management. It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight without feeling wet!

But isn't wool difficult to wash?

No not at all! Unlike duck or goose down, our wool insulation is fully machine washable. Because our insulation is 75% wool combined with 25% PLA it’s fine to go in the machine. PLA is compostable, biocompatible, and renewable thermoplastic polyester which is derived from corn starch.

Traceability

All our wool can be traced back to the farm it came from and is Woolkeepers® certified. Farmers are paid properly and in turn ensure that regenerative land management is practiced through the Land to Market™ standard.
“Regenerative agriculture has a critical role to play in impacting the climate crisis. We measure outcomes & impact on the environment such as soil health, sequestered carbon, water & biodiversity.”
Last year we received our first rolls of HD Wool insulation. These went straight over to Blackburn to Caledonian Quilting to be made up into several different weights of quilting. We started with three sample garments, made at Cookson and Clegg in Blackburn, to see how the insulation performed. Denim vest, bomber jacket and a windproof/water resistant quilted vest.

1. Quilted Denim Vest

Our popular Quilted Denim Vest was a sell out success last year so replacing the synthetic insulation with wool was the obvious next move.

“Denim from the Candiani Mill in Italy, recycled polyester lining quilted with British wool, Merino wool rib neck and a UK made zip.”

All that goodness for £115. Just compare the traceability and quality that we’re offering for that price with other brands and their off shore manufactured offerings.

2. Body Warmer

Available in Kalahari, and Marine

During the sample phase, Ed refused to take it off. It’s basically a washable and more ethical version of the down vest that we all love. Comfortable, top quality, practical and with a clean understated style. You’ll love it.

The soft to the touch outer is made from a lightweight windproof and water repellent recycled fabric from Olmatex, a highly regarded Italian mill who specialise in technical fabrics that are beautiful to wear.

“This is not crisp packet laminated plastic outdoor wear!”

3. Coming soon..

Finally, and still to come, we’ve sampled a fully quilted denim bomber jacket which is lovely. Merino rib collar and cuffs in the classic bomber style. Next we’re going to try this in a lighter technical outer and then it will be decision time for production. Maybe we’ll have both!

Expect more new ideas for how we’re going to be using this game changing new insulation, that is in fact, centuries old.
