Check your waist
Some brands use ”vanity sizing” but we don’t. “Stretch” jeans from other brands might actually be several inches bigger than they say on the label.
1. Grab a pair of trousers that fit you & a tape measure.
2. Do up the top button & lay them flat on a table.
3. Measure across (inches) like the photo below:
4. Double that number & you have the waist size. Easy!
If you’re between sizes, we recommend going UP – so if your jeans measure 18.5 across go for a 38 not a 36.

What is Selvedge denim?
Selvedge is old-style denim, woven on narrow looms and typically has a more characterful appearance and a higher level of quality than mass-produced denim.
You can see the selvedge (self edged) stripe at the turn up. It’s where during weaving the outside edge of the cloth has been woven together to stop it having a raw edge.
How is it eco denim?
Candiani are Italian denim masters. They are also the world’s most eco denim mill. The GVNR 16 are made from Candiani selvedge denim and have the highest environmental credentials.
Environmental sustainability is at the forefront of all stages of production of selvedge denim. Using BCI cotton, a micro-plastics free dye process, solar power and water recycling to name some of the process used.
Washing and getting those good fades.
You’ve bought a lovely pair of raw denim jeans. As they get older and start to fade you want to create your own fade lines rather than have the washing machine do it. If you want the best looking jeans wash at 3 to 6 month intervals. Washing more frequently is fine, you’ll just get more overall fading rather than a contrast between dark indigo and light fade.
Don’t just stick them in the washing machine with everything. For best results drip dry, don’t spin, and definitely don’t tumble dry.
Will my jeans shrink?
The denim we use is raw. This means that it hasn’t been washed and hasn’t been through chemical colour-fast treatments. It has been sanforized though, which means that shrinkage on first wash will be minimal – less than 2% in length and 1% in width.
This means that leg length will shorten by half to three quarters of an inch. Waist shrinkage is negligible. Jeans may tighten a little in the waist, but will loosen after wear. They will only lose half an inch in length and you’ve got 2″ in the turn up.
To turn up or not to turn up?
The GVNR comes with a turn up so that the selvedge is visible. This means that there is 2 inch extra length in the inseam.
Depending on the length you order you can adjust leg length, by rolling up or down, to get it just as you like it, or even do away with the turn up altogether.
The turn up is pressed but not sewn in place.

Ed wears 32/28 in the photos. He’s 5’8″ and 10.5 stone
16oz jeans will be a bit stiff at first but with a few day’s wear the denim will soften and take your shape to fit just right. There’s isn’t a wearing in period of months like you get with, for example, 21oz denim.

It’s hard to review a long term product after only a month, these will take a while to wear in because I’m wearing as ‘best’ to start with – I already have part worn 177s & ‘skinny’ M16s to see off first. Not riding bikes or in the lock-up; really trying hard not to wipe my hands on them or overload the pockets. So far they’ve only been worn in the car, & for visiting ‘fancy’ pubs, stately homes & crematoria etc. They’re not as baggy as I feared GVNRs might be, the fly buttons are still pretty stiff but I can feel the denim settling in already. I’ve been wearing an M16 jacket for a year now, it hasn’t needed a wash yet (jackets don’t get dirty as quick as jeans if you take ‘em off before you get stuck into the job!) so it’s getting some good character now, I look forward to these jeans getting the same look. It’s probably better to break jeans in over a long period, I think I rushed it with the earlier pairs; particularly the skinny ones which I wore for a polo weekend when they were only about 6 weeks old. That lead to a bit too much crotch wear & I think will be a fiddly repair! (Not gone right through yet). Generally I like the way all 3 pairs are made, even down to detail like the extra bit of lining in the back pockets – no keys or spanners poking through yet! & the fit is good; people don’t see my underwear & the unturned-up legs are unlikely to catch in a bicycle chain! I should have said ‘ask me in a year’, but I think they’ll work out fine. P.S. I haven’t found the secret pocket yet.

Years (and years) ago I tried some cowboy jeans from a famous mass-producer. After the third pair broke, no more. Zippers, belt loops, even the tag on the waist. Annoying.
I was already wearing the other famous jeans from San Francisco. I stuck with them, and for over 50 years I’ve never had a pair let me down. Not one pair. But out of San Francisco they are no more. All I wear is shrink-to-fit raw denim. Problem now is you never know from what country or part of the world they’re coming from. Every pair is a whole new deal.
I’ve been the HTC fan from the beginning, and I’ve made a stand. I support makers. No more mass-produced goods for me. I expect these will outlast me, and that’s okay. I wasn’t going to be buying too many more jeans ever anyway, so what’s a few coin more?
