This is a story that spans six years of blanketdom. Born in the great plague of 2020 to warm the cockles of a grounded population, the original HebTroCo Action Blankets were a hit. So simple and practical, people wore them in camper vans, working from home, in socially distanced beer gardens, and just watching the telly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears passed without any new blankets until 2025, when we rekindled the project with the expertise of local textile designer Rebecca Ough. The blanket was designed from the ground up, and Rebecca painstakingly created 20 handwoven Action Blankets for us on her AVL handloom.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis year’s mission was to take that design to the next stage in its journey - from handloom to power loom. Every part had to evolve: the pattern, the colour, the wool yarn. Fringed edges have also made their comeback for the first time since 2020, and the 100% cotton-bound head hole has been reinstated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe’re calling the pattern Camoflock. It echoes the camo-like appearance of the handwoven blanket, but is now a canvas of olive green, brown, emerald, iron and oatmeal, criss-crossed like markers on a map. A nod to the beauty and wildness of the hills and valley towns we see every day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMade from 100% pure new wool from British-born and bred sheep. Processed, spun, custom dyed and woven in Britain. This is not your run-of-the-mill blanket. Not just any leather either, this is full grain, bridal butt, the best and strongest part of the hide. We buy it from J. \u0026amp; F. J. Baker \u0026amp; Co, Britain's last remaining oak bark tannery. There has actually been a tannery on the Baker site since Roman times. Incredible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOak bark tanning is a slow, traditional vegetable-tanning method. And when we say slow tanning, we mean it. Their leather takes around 14 months to make, using oak bark, water from the stream running alongside the tannery and hides from Devon cattle. The oak bark comes from coppiced woodland in the Lake District and Wales, and an ancient waterwheel keeps the tanning pits gently moving.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce we’ve got the leather, it makes its way north to Alex the blacksmith’s workshop in Scotland. He measures and cuts each strap from the bridle butt, the holes are punched and the edges are bevelled, burnished and finished with beeswax. The beeswax helps protect the edges from water, while the burnishing gives them a smooth, hard-wearing finish. You may notice the waxy white residue on the leather. Buff this away with a cloth or leave it in place to wear off naturally within a few weeks of wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo mass production, no conveyor belt, no shortcuts.
